Pro and Prebiotics

We hear a lot about probiotics these days. And for good reason! To be healthy our bodies should be full of these helpful little critters, as these intestinal micro-flora are necessary for balance and aide in digestion. They prevent the proliferation of infectious fungi, bacterium, and many other pesky problem causers. Yes, it's true they are living organisms that inhabit our bodies. I'm sure you all know these things, really. We find them in cultured foods such as yogurt and kefir, and also in fermented foods such as sauerkraut. Many people take them in supplement form, i.e. acidophilus.

A few little known facts that I just became aware of...

Did you know that if you are nursing a child any probiotics you take in will be metabolized, and passed to your babe through your milk? Amazing!

Have you ever heard of prebiotics? These are not the living probiotics, but what our friendly neighorhood intestinal flora eat. They consist of a fiber/carbohydrate (oligosaccharides) that our bodies themselves cannot utilize, but are nevertheless found abundantly in a balanced diet. Fruits, veggis, leafy greens... In short, ensuring we have probiotics in our life is important, but it's not all. We must incorporate their food into our diets as well. So many things in nature "just happen" to go together. God is amazing!

  2. Wow! We have to eat good food to provide good food to the little critters in our bodies so they can make our bodies healthy, along with the good food we're eating! It's like the circle of life! :) Love it.
